Enzian Theater (Website) will present a free screening of “Sally,” a documentary about astronaut Sally Ride, on Saturday, May 23 at 11 a.m. The event will include a pre-film discussion with April Jennifer Choi, an aerospace engineer at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
Directed by Cristina Costantini, “Sally” tells the story of Sally Ride’s groundbreaking journey as the first American woman in space alongside the deeply personal story of her 27-year relationship with partner Tam O’Shaughnessy, which she kept secret during her lifetime.
The documentary weaves together Ride’s private romance with her professional trajectory in the space program, where she faced overt sexism and homophobia. The film features rare archival footage from NASA training and missions, as well as press appearances that reflect the media scrutiny Ride endured before and after her historic first flight.
April Jennifer Choi is an LGBTQ+ woman in STEM who holds 23 Guinness World Records as a fire performer and whip artist outside of her aerospace engineering work. She will discuss the complexities of navigating global visibility and resilience in facing public scrutiny (and hopefully some of her fire stuff too).
The event is free, but reservations are required due to limited theater capacity. Tickets can be reserved HERE.
