Dr. Phillips Center launches Florida’s first musical theatre intensive for high schoolers

Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts (Website) is launching the Florida Musical Theatre Intensive (Website), a two-week pre-professional program for high school students running from June 14 to 28. The center says it is the first program of its kind in the state, and we don’t know how to double-check that, so we believe them.

Sixty students will be selected through a video audition process. Applicants must be Florida residents entering their sophomore year through graduating seniors with an interest in musical theatre. Previous performance experience is recommended but not required. The program is looking for dedication and willingness to learn as much as it is looking for raw talent.

Students will train in voice, dance, acting, and audition technique through a conservatory-style curriculum at the AdventHealth School of the Arts, working alongside industry professionals. The two weeks culminate in a fully staged production of West Side Story performed in Steinmetz Hall. The program is all-inclusive, covering classes, rehearsals, masterclasses, housing, meals, and full production costs. Scholarships based on financial need, interest, and talent are available and considered as part of the audition process.

The FMTI expands Dr. Phillips Center’s existing arts education pipeline, which includes the Applause Awards program and year-round training through AdventHealth School of the Arts. The program is supported by the Florida Division of Arts and Culture.
