Downtown Orlando’s First United Methodist Church seeks redevelopment proposals for full city block

First United Methodist Church of Orlando (Website) has issued a formal Request for Proposals for the redevelopment of its full-city-block campus at 142 East Jackson Street [GMap] after more than 140 years on the same downtown property.

The church has partnered with Foundry Commercial (Website) to gather proposals for the campus, which comprises two sanctuary buildings and multiple gathering spaces totaling 98,556 SF. The campus includes a traditional sanctuary with a steeple and a courtyard built in 1962, and a contemporary worship space.

“We believe we are being called to steward this property in a way that allows it to serve an even greater purpose,” said Debbie Mitchell, church business administrator. “This campus has been part of countless moments of faith, grief, celebration, and community over the years, and we do not take that lightly. But the church is ultimately its people and its mission, not any one building.”

The church, which has anchored downtown Orlando since 1881, is exploring redevelopment as congregations across the country face changing attendance patterns and rising facility costs.

The property sits in the heart of downtown Orlando, across from the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and near Lake Eola, the Kia Center, and City Hall.

First United Methodist Church sold off property to the City of Orlando and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts just this past August for an estimated $10.39 million. The church completed a multimillion-dollar building project that opened a new ministry building in September 2011.
