New Smyrna Beach High School employee arrested after online messaging investigation

New Smyrna Beach police have arrested a New Smyrna Beach High School employee on charges tied to inappropriate online messages with someone he believed to be a minor, according to the police department.

Police identified the employee as 51-year-old Walter Allen Reeves, who worked as a Career and Technical Education industrial education teacher at the school. He is charged with soliciting a child, or a person believed to be a child, for unlawful sexual conduct using a computer or device, and with unlawful use of a two-way communications device.

The person Reeves was communicating with “was actually an adult who later reported the communications to school officials and law enforcement,” police said. The investigation began August 7 after school administrators reported allegations about inappropriate online communications, according to the department. Police said detectives “conducted a thorough investigation before making the arrest.”

Police said the employee was removed from student contact before the school year started and was not on campus while students were present during the investigation.
