City of Orlando opens call for bird photos, with $500 top prize

PHOTO BY HAEWON OH VIA UNSPLASH.COM

The City of Orlando is accepting entries for Birds in Focus: District 3, a photography competition for images of birds captured within City Commission District 3.

Orlando photographers can submit photos through an online form from September 6 through midnight on December 15, 2026, according to the City of Orlando event page. The theme is birds in District 3 that reflect the district’s natural character, like an egret, pelican, ibis, or swan.

The competition is hosted by District 3 Commissioner Roger Chapin and FAVO, and curated by local photographer and excellent hugger, Jim Hobart (Instagram). Twelve photographs will be chosen for exhibition at FAVO on February 5 and 6, 2027. Attendees will vote on the winners. First place receives $500, second place $250, and third place $150. Chapin will also select one Commissioner’s Choice photograph. The City of Orlando will buy it for its art collection and display it in the District 3 office.

All twelve exhibited photographs will appear in a District 3 bird calendar. Hobart will print and frame each photo at 16 by 24 inches, with framing sponsored by local District 3 businesses at no cost to the artists (or local taxpayers).

Full details and the submission form are available HERE.
