Orange County Public Schools will open a microschool focused on baseball and softball at Cheney Elementary (Website) in Orlando in August, as first reported by Joe Byrnes for Central Florida Public Media.
The program will serve 48 students in third through sixth grade with two teachers and two coaches on the same campus as Cheney Elementary, but will operate as its own separate school.
The microschool is part of the district’s effort to attract parents as student enrollment declines amid lower birth rates and competition from Florida’s universal voucher program. Hundreds of parents have already expressed interest in response to a survey, and the district plans to hold an informational meeting and tryouts in the near future.
District officials said the program could expand to other sports such as soccer.
