Orange Audubon Society hosting Biking and Birding event at Orlando Wetlands, November 1

PHOTO VIA EVENT FACEBOOK PAGE

Nature enthusiasts will have a chance to experience the Orlando Wetlands (Website) from a new perspective during a special Biking and Birding Expedition led by Alan Shapiro and Pete Johnson, on Saturday, November 1. According to the Facebook Event page, the guided trip begins at 8 a.m. in the main parking lot of Orlando Wetlands Park and offers participants the opportunity to cover more ground than a traditional walking tour, and reach remote areas of the wetlands that are rarely accessible on foot.

Cyclists will travel slowly and stop frequently to observe wildlife along the route, which makes the three-and-a-half-hour ride more accessible to those without cycling experience. Participants must bring their own bicycles, but note that pedal-assist or electric bikes are not permitted at Orlando Wetlands. Attendees should come prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, bug spray, snacks, and binoculars. Cameras and a good hat are also recommended. Birders love bucket hats.

The wetlands are home to a wide range of bird species, and early morning riders can expect to see most of them. Possible sightings include Ring-necked Ducks, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, Mottled Ducks, Lesser Scaup, Sora, Virginia Rail, Northern Harrier, Bald Eagle, Belted Kingfisher, American Kestrel, Vermilion Flycatcher, Sedge Wren, Marsh Wren, Swamp Sparrow, Common Yellowthroat, and Painted Bunting. Mammal sightings could include River Otters, White-tailed Deer, Bobcats, and half-naked hikers making out in the bushes.

Participation is limited to 12 people, so hurry up and reserve while you can. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Space can be reserved through the Orange Audubon Society website, HERE.
