You can now take a Volusia County shelter dog to the beach for the day

Halifax Humane Society (Website) has launched Dogs Day Out, a new volunteer program that lets community members take shelter dogs on day trips around Volusia County.

Starting July 1, volunteers can visit the shelter any day of the week between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., pick a dog, and check out a backpack stocked with supplies and a list of dog-approved activities.

Dogs must be returned by noon, and outings can include parks, beaches, trails, or pet-friendly businesses. Volunteers fill out a report card when they return, logging observations about the dog’s personality and behavior that staff will use to better match dogs with potential adopters.

The program is funded by an ASPCA grant and is designed to reduce kennel stress, gather behavioral data, and get dogs in front of more potential adopters outside the shelter environment.

The first 125 volunteers will receive a t-shirt, ball cap, and water bottle, plus two admission passes to the Daytona Aquarium & Rainforest Adventure. Dogs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Outings can also be reserved in advance by emailing DogsDayOut@HalifaxHumaneSociety.org.

Halifax Humane Society is located in Daytona Beach and has served Volusia County since 1937.
