Wekiva Island (Website) is celebrating World Rivers Day on Sunday, September 27, with a full day of activities that “honor and raise awareness” for the Wekiva River.
The day opens with a river and road cleanup alongside Keep Seminole Beautiful from 8 to 11 a.m., with free canoes offered to cleanup volunteers, followed by river tours with Wekiva Wild (Website) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., guiding guests along the river’s ecosystem. Children’s activities with Idea Bar run from noon to 4 p.m., followed by live music from Lucy Spotts from 2 to 6 p.m.
From 5 to 6 p.m., representatives from the Wekiva Wild & Scenic River System Advisory Committee, Florida Springs Council, Friends of the Wekiva River, and Seminole County Commissioner Lee Constantine will hold River Talks, discussing efforts to keep the Wekiva wild and scenic for future generations.
The day closes at 6 p.m. with the unveiling of the first phase of Wekiva Island’s Wild & Scenic River Mural Project, which is meant to celebrate the river, its wildlife, history, and natural landscape.
Additional programming includes Gallery CERO’s onsite American Tapestry exhibition and hands-on history activities from the Wekiva Wilderness Trust. Without a Paddle Café will serve its regular all-American hot dog menu, with Catfish Baskets, hush puppies, fries and coleslaw added for the occasion.
