Beefy King (Website) at 424 N. Bumby Avenue [GMap] landed a feature in Southern Living last week, with contributing barbecue editor Robert F. Moss declaring it “home to one of the best roast beef sandwiches in the South” and sharing the full story behind nearly six decades of operation.
The piece covers the restaurant’s 1968 founding, the Smith family’s purchase that same year, the brand’s brief expansion to more than 20 Florida locations before the franchisor collapsed, and how the Bumby Avenue original has survived as the lone holdout. It’s now run by third-generation owner Shannon Woodrow and her husband Woody, a former minor league pitcher who took over day-to-day operations in 2000. It even shares the step-by-step process behind making their award-winning sandwiches.
Beefy King is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
