Petition launched to bring back Publix Hurricane Cakes

A new Change.org petition called “Bring Back Publix Hurricane Cakes!” is calling on the Lakeland-based grocer to revive its swirl-iced, storm-themed cakes that used to pop up across the Southeast during hurricane season.

Publix discontinued hurricane cakes in 2023, after backlash that the designs, often radar-style swirls with cheeky messages like “Go Away,” could trivialize deadly storms in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

Organizer Tim Lawler’s petition has a goal of gathering 35,000 signatures and had already cleared 32,000 by Wednesday evening, and claims that the cakes are a fun way to lift spirits, and people shouldn’t take them too seriously.

Unless Publix suddenly decides to reverse course, the push is mostly symbolic. But with signature counts rising and hurricane season in full swing, if enough people are talking about it, who knows what could happen.
