PHOTO VIA VICTORY CUP INITIATIVE
EDIT: This post originally stated that there is $4 million in funding available for this year’s event, but that was incorrect. They have given away $4 million since their inception. Last year’s winner took home over $50,000, but the final amount varies and depends on donations during the event.
When the curtain rises on the 11th Victory Cup Initiative (Website) next February, the ballroom will be brimming with more than 500 business and civic leaders, all seated not to dine, but to choose. For one morning, Central Florida’s nonprofit sector takes center stage in what has become the region’s most inventive act of civic philanthropy: a Shark Tank–style showcase where ideas for social impact are met with the capital to make them real.
The stakes are not small. Last year’s winner walked away with over $50,000. More than $4 million has been raised since it first launched, distributed among organisations tackling everything from homelessness and mental health to education and the arts. Each nonprofit has precisely two minutes to present its case, including a distillation of mission, impact, and need.
What makes the format distinctive is its inversion of the traditional gala model. Instead of speeches followed by donations, here the city’s decision-makers are cast as an audience of investors, with their collective judgment determining how funds are allocated. “It’s disciplined, democratic and deeply local,” says one organiser, pointing out that the initiative’s reach now stretches well beyond Orlando, with leaders from across Florida taking part.
For participants, the rewards go beyond the cheques. Past finalists say the exposure to hundreds of executives, civic officials, and cultural patrons has yielded partnerships as valuable as the funding itself.
Applications are open from September 2-22, and you can get more information HERE..
