Orange County Arts and Cultural Affairs is hosting the opening reception for Hype Hair, a series of wearable hair sculptures by artist Peppermint Sandy (Instagram), on Thursday, June 11 at the Atrium Gallery inside the Orange County Administration Center at 201 S. Rosalind Avenue [GMap]. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the program begins at 5:45 p.m. Admission is free, but advance registration is requested.
The exhibit, which runs through June 25, is a love letter to Black women and girls and their relationship with hair. In the artist’s own words: “From the beginning of time, black hair is not only art, but a form of communication. From identifying tribes through braids, to weaving rice for nourishment into the very braids that were cornrowed into escape routes during slavery, to hair being in rollers the night before Easter Sunday, our hair has spoken to us, for us, and by us.”
The title is inspired by Hype Hair magazine, a publication the artist describes as one of the only representations of art infused with Black culture she could take home as a child. Each piece in the series incorporates elements of everyday life and draws on styles worn by her elders.
The exhibit is on view Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., excluding holidays, through June 25.
