New Diamond Interchange now open at I-4 and Daryl Carter Parkway

Earlier today, Florida Department of Transportation officials, along with Orange County leaders and MetroPlan Orlando, officially inaugurated the brand-new diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at Interstate 4 and Daryl Carter Parkway, Exit 70, in the tourist corridor.

Under a Diverging Diamond Design, traffic briefly shifts to the left under the overpass, eliminating the need for left-turn signal phases across oncoming traffic and ideally improving safety and smoothing traffic flow. Drivers can now exit I‑4 in both directions to access Daryl Carter Parkway, and there’s a new eastbound entrance ramp. Construction of a westbound on-ramp is planned for a future phase.

The project includes protected bike lanes, marked sidewalks, and safer crosswalks.

Located between Sand Lake Road and the Disney exits, this interchange offers a crucial bypass option, easing backups on both I‑4 and local arterials. With hundreds of thousands of vehicles daily and significant population growth, officials highlight that “these improvements are not only wanted, they’re needed” to maintain mobility in an increasingly busy corridor.

This project forms part of the larger “I‑4 Beyond the Ultimate” initiative, which includes expanding I‑4 Express lanes and other major interchange improvements across Central Florida.
