Orlando-based The Kerouac Project (Website) is asking for donations to repair the 1920s College Park house where Jack Kerouac wrote The Dharma Bums while On The Road was being published. The nonprofit needs an estimated $300,000 for repairs and to create an emergency fund.
The house at 1418 Clouser Avenue [GMap] is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jack Kerouac lived there with his mother from July 1957 to spring 1958. He wrote “The Dharma Bums” while living in the back half of the cottage.
As a nationally registered historic home, all repairs must follow Orange County Historic Review Board requirements. According to the organization’s director, the organization’s insurance tripled last year, adding financial pressure. B
The nonprofit has operated the writers-in-residence program since 2000 and hosts roughly six writers per year for two-month residencies. Writers live rent-free in the cottage with utilities covered and receive a $600 food and supplies stipend while working on their projects. More than 65 writers from the United States and other countries have completed residencies at the house, and the Kerouac Project also hosts public readings, welcome receptions, and writing workshops.
The all-volunteer board has 15 members representing area colleges, schools, retail organizations, banks, and publishing companies. No salaries or benefits are paid, allowing donations to go directly toward maintaining the property.
The organization also owns an adjoining house used as a rental property to generate income.
