Gorillaz (Soundcloud | Website) just announced their first extensive North American tour since 2022, and Orlando scored the opening night. The Mountain Tour hits Kia Center on September 17, with British rapper, Little Simz (Soundcloud) joining on most dates and Deltron 3030 (Soundcloud) opening all shows.
The tour supports The Mountain, the band’s ninth studio album, released February 27 as a tribute, as both Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett lost their fathers while making it. The record is being called the most cohesive and ambitious Gorillaz album in years. It was recorded partly in London and Devon and partly across India, and features an enormous cast of collaborators, including IDLES, Johnny Marr, Yasiin Bey, Anoushka Shankar, Sparks, Bizarrap, and posthumous appearances from Bobby Womack, Tony Allen, Dave Jolicoeur of De La Soul, and others.
Alongside the album, the band released an eight-minute animated short film, The Mountain, The Moon Cave and The Sad God (embedded below), directed by Hewlett and made entirely from hand-drawn cel animation, using techniques drawn from films like The Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians.
The band also makes its SNL debut this Saturday, March 7, on an episode hosted by Ryan Gosling.
