Free kids fishing event returns to Hontoon Island State Park September 19

The Friends of the River of Lakes Heritage Corridor (Website) will host “Hooked on the Byway: Kids Try Fishing,” a free fishing event for children ages 6 to 12, on Saturday, September 19, at Hontoon Island State Park in DeLand. The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

The event takes place along the River of Lakes Heritage Corridor, a 156-mile National Scenic Byway winding through Volusia and Seminole counties. With DeLand and Sanford at its heart, the corridor connects communities like Pierson, Seville, Barberville, DeLeon Springs, DeBary, Lake Helen, Cassadaga, Enterprise and Osteen, following the St. Johns River.

According to the official press release, the family-friendly event is designed to introduce children to fishing while highlighting outdoor recreation and connecting young people with Florida’s natural resources. Participants will learn basic fishing skills, including casting, rigging and baiting.

Every participating child will receive their own fishing pole to take home, made possible through a Fish Florida Fishing Equipment Program Grant from Fish Florida, Florida Foundation for Responsible Angling, Inc. The event is also supported by Friends of Blue Spring State Park.

Registration is required, and space is limited. Families are encouraged to register early. More information is available HERE.
