Apopka residents head to the polls tomorrow, Tuesday, April 14, to choose their next mayor in a runoff between Apopka City Commissioner Nick Nesta and Orange County Commissioner Christine Moore. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at two locations: Apopka Community Center at 519 S. Central Avenue [GMap] and the Northwest Recreation Complex at 3710 Jason Dwelley Parkway [GMap]. Residents can find their assigned polling place at ocfelections.gov.
The runoff follows a March 10 three-way general election in which neither candidate cleared the 50%-plus-one threshold needed to win outright. Nesta led with about 42% of the vote, Moore finished second with about 32%, and incumbent Mayor Bryan Nelson, who had previously filed and then dropped a lawsuit attempting to remove Moore from the ballot over residency concerns, came in third with about 27%.
Nick Nesta (Website) is an Apopka city commissioner and lifelong Apopka resident who has positioned himself as a change candidate. He has called for new economic development leadership downtown, fresh perspectives on city management, and says he owes no favors to the political establishment. He will resign his commissioner seat as of April 28, regardless of the outcome.
Christine Moore (Website) is an Orange County District 2 Commissioner who has focused her campaign on infrastructure, particularly moving homes from septic to sewer, and has pledged to control growth, revitalize downtown, and preserve Apopka’s history. She has pointed to her track record of raising hundreds of millions of dollars for county infrastructure projects as a key qualification.
If you have a vote-by-mail ballot, it must be returned to the county elections office by 7 p.m. tonight.
