According to a report by Orlando Business Journal‘s Patricia Tolley, Universal Orlando Resort is moving forward with plans to explore an underground transportation system in partnership with Elon Musk’s The Boring Company (Website), which specializes in digging tunnels or something.
The Shingle Creek Transit and Utility Community Development District Board, which oversees infrastructure in the Universal area, voted this month to begin negotiating a contract with The Boring Company to cover the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a proposed tunnel-based transit system intended to connect key parts of the resort.
The initial phase under consideration would link Universal’s new Epic Universe theme park with nearby hotels. Future phases could extend service to Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, CityWalk, and properties along International Drive. The full buildout could span approximately four to five miles, depending on final routing and approvals.
The Boring Company operates a similar system in Las Vegas, where Tesla vehicles transport passengers through underground tunnels between convention and resort properties. Details about the proposed Orlando system, including vehicle type, station locations, construction timeline, and cost, have not been publicly released. The Las Vegas Loop uses a fleet of Teslas.
Board members indicated that negotiations are still underway and that no final contract has been approved. If terms cannot be reached, the district could reopen the bidding process. Representatives for Universal and The Boring Company have not announced a construction start date.
