Starbucks renewed focus on cafes with seating puts pick-up stores in jeopardy

Starbucks has just announced a major reversal in its strategy and plans to pivot away from its previous emphasis on mobile-only and pickup‑only formats towards reinstating traditional café models, with seating and drive‑thru access as part of its new “Back to Starbucks” turnaround plan under CEO Brian Niccol.

The shift follows the decision to phase out its Pick-Up–only store program, which features some 80–90 locations across the country that offered no seating and lacked public bathrooms. Niccol stated these formats were “too transactional” and failed to deliver the warmth and community connection intrinsic to the Starbucks brand. Nichol shared that not all of the pick-up locations would be closing, as they would be converting a number of them into full-service cafés with seating areas.

Starbucks is rolling out a prototype of what it calls the “coffeehouse of the future”, set to debut in the next fiscal year, that will feature more seating, drive‑thru lanes, and that aforementioned “warm coffeehouse vibe,” complete with comfortable furniture, power outlets, and ambient lighting.

Approximately 1,000 U.S. company-owned locations are slated for renovation by late 2026, with café “uplifts” that introduce wood finishes, plant accents, condiment stations, and improved seating zones to invite longer stays and community engagement.

We spoke with a Starbucks rep who cleared up several things, including:

  • That they would not be moving away from mobile ordering, as it accounts for 31% of their transactions.
  • They’ll actually be leaning more into their Starbucks App and enhancing Mobile Order and Pay options.

But she did say she was unable to comment on specific stores when we asked about the future of the College Park cafe on Edgewater Drive. That cafe was converted into a walk-up window-only store just over a year ago and had its outdoor furniture removed, with its interior accessible only to Starbucks staff. Another drive-up-only store opened in Sanford in May 2024. Given the small footprint of both stores, their future doesn’t look bright.
