The City of Kissimmee (Website) has ordered residents to evacuate the Kissimmee Homes apartment complex on McLaren Circle [GMap] after a large sinkhole opened on the property, rendering parts of the property unsafe for habitation. Officials cite significant structural instability caused by the 30-foot-wide hole, which may have been connected to underground utility failure or soil subsidence.
According to a report by WFTV 9, all attempts by the City of Kissimmee to contact the owners have failed, and they have not taken any action to resolve the issue.
City inspectors assessed the site and determined that certain buildings are no longer fit for full occupancy, prompting mandatory relocations. While no injuries have been reported, authorities emphasize that the area poses a potential danger to residents until the property can be stabilized. According to WKMG News 6, residents are not being allowed back into the buildings to retrieve their belongings.
Temporary housing accommodations are being coordinated by local emergency management teams, and the city has pledged to support displaced tenants during the displacement period. Engineers and safety officials are currently evaluating the extent of the damage, expected timeline for repairs, and possible long-term solutions, including ground reinforcement and infrastructure inspections.
