Science Center hosting one-day skateboarding event to open new exhibit

PHOTO VIA ORLANDO SCIENCE CENTER

Orlando Science Center (Website) will host a one-day skateboarding science event on December 6, featuring hands-on activities and demonstrations that connect the physics of skateboarding with basic math concepts involved in the “gnarly science of skateboarding.” Skate Bud (Website), a nonprofit focused on skateboard accessibility, and semi-pro skaters from Galactic G Skateshop (Website) will lead the day’s programs. All activities are included with general admission.

From 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., visitors can take part in “Learn, Create, Skate!” in the Level 1 Clubhouse. The session introduces the fundamentals of movement and balance through fingerboard stations, giving guests a safe way to understand how force and motion work before stepping on a real board. Participants can also design small cardboard skate parks to explore how ramps and surfaces affect speed and direction.

Also running from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., “Skateboards 101: Stand on the Deck!” offers a controlled way for beginners to practice standing and balancing on modified training boards. Skate Bud instructors will guide visitors through basic techniques and safety steps to help them get comfortable on a skateboard.

Galactic G skaters will perform demonstrations near Entrance A during the same hours on a small course to show how skaters use momentum, angles, and timing to complete tricks.

Visitors can also explore 2theXtreme! on Level 2, the Science Center’s new math-focused exhibit. The gallery covers the role of mathematics in sports, design, engineering, and problem-solving, with interactive stations that let guests test and compare real-world scenarios. The exhibit remains open through January 5.
