Heavy rain closing Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive through Indigenous People’s Day

The St. Johns River Water Management District (Website) will close the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive to motor vehicles from October 9 to October 12 due to heavy rainfall and saturated road conditions, according to the official press release.

The Water Management District said the closure includes Columbus Day, October 12, when the Wildlife Drive would normally be open. The drive is on the Lake Apopka North Shore in Apopka.

District officials said the roads within the area are prone to damage when wet conditions combine with heavy vehicle traffic, with thousands of vehicle trips typically occurring over the holiday weekend. The district said keeping the roads closed will help prevent costly damage and protect recent roadway improvements.

The Lake Apopka Loop Trail and all pedestrian access gates will stay open to pedestrians and bicycles. The district said they are not affected by the temporary closure.

Updates on closures to district lands are posted at the district’s recreation announcements page and on its social media accounts. For full details, click HERE.
