Enzian Theater (Website) will screen the 1979 cult classic The Warriors on VHS on Tuesday, May 26, at 9:30 p.m. as part of its Cult Classics series.
The screening is intentionally formatted on VHS and projected through the theater’s 4K laser projector, complete with tracking lines, tape hiss, and analog imperfections. Enzian’s 35mm projector is being upgraded this month, prompting the theater to temporarily embrace VHS for its Cult Classics programming.
“This isn’t some 4K crystal clear restoration,” the theater’s description reads. “This time we’re dragging Swan, Ajax, Luther, and Cochise straight outta the gutter and straight into the VCR. Tracking lines, tape hiss, and all.”
The Warriors follows a New York City gang framed for murder who must fight their way from the Bronx back to their home turf in Coney Island. Directed by Walter Hill, the film has become a cult classic for its stylized depiction of gang warfare, comic book aesthetic, and synthesizer-heavy soundtrack.
The 93-minute film is in English and Spanish. Enzian rates it “warrioRRR” instead of its original R rating.
L.A. Weekly called the film “the most exciting film in America right now” upon its release, while Consequence described it as “a gangland fantasia, cut tighter than a snare drum, made for maximum impact.”
