d.b.a. to host art exhibition by Jon Napoles

IMAGE VIA JON NAPOLES

Mills 50 darling, d.b.a. (Instagram) will be hosting an art show on August 3, featuring the (amazing) works of Orlando artist Jon Napoles (Website).

Jon Napoles is a self-taught artist from Florida whose bold, punk‑DIY spirit transforms reclaimed materials into hauntingly resonant art, with exhibitions at major museums and indie art events. His signature technique: reverse-painting on reclaimed window panes, involves layering foreground detail first on the back of glass to harness light and color through transparency. His practice draws direct inspiration from the ’70s punk/DIY movement and artists like Raymond Pettibon, featuring neon animals, drinking scenes, and conversational snippets with word bubbles and fun textures with reclaimed materials.

Many of Napoles’s windows were rescued from dilapidated houses, sometimes even southern crack houses, repurposed into art sold for whiskey early in his career.

His exhibition at d.b.a., Horses That Fly, will feature a collection of works for sale, created using razor-cut horse silhouettes, birds, and characters, in his trademark folk-art style. The opening party on the 3rd will run from 5-8 p.m. Expect some good craft cocktails to accompany the art.
