Call to Artists: Tangelo Park Community Center public art deadline is November 4

RENDERING VIA ORANGE COUNTY

Orange County is seeking artists to create public artwork for the Tangelo Park Community Center, with a $28,200 commission budget and a deadline of Wednesday, November 4.

Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs issued the request for qualifications on behalf of the Orange County Public Art Review Board. Applications go through the CaFÉ portal. The newly renovated community center is at 5160 Pueblo Street [GMap] in southwest Orlando.

The work could take the form of murals, mosaics, or photographic journalism. Possible themes include community, family, multigenerational gatherings, and a historical perspective on Tangelo Park. Possible sites include the gymnasium, hallways and corridors, and the poolside walls and back of the building.

The $28,200 budget covers design, fabrication, materials, installation, insurance, travel, presentations, meetings, the identification plaque, and incidentals. Several artists will be invited to submit site-specific proposals, and each will receive a $300 design stipend, according to the listing. There is no entry fee.

The call is open to professional artists in any appropriate media, and artists from anywhere in the country may apply. Applicants must submit one to five images of finished work or conceptual drawings, an artist statement, a career statement, and a letter of interest, plus a resume. Each written item must be under 1,000 characters and prepared for a blind jury. Prior public art experience is helpful but not required.

A panel of the project manager, stakeholders, and art professionals will review qualifications. The county may reject any or all applications or modify or end the process at any time.

Selected artists must work with a structural engineer so the piece can withstand Florida’s sun, heat, and hurricane-force winds. They must also provide a W-9, sign an Orange County artist agreement, and carry the required insurance. Workers’ compensation is required for individual artists who will use ladders, lifts, or other equipment during installation, and an exemption certificate is not accepted. Installation is planned for winter to spring 2027.
