The City of Orlando’s Office of Community Affairs is accepting poetry submissions for the Words & Wonders Poetry Contest through May 14, and the theme is “Many Voices, One Sky.”
The prompt asks writers to reflect on what it means to share a country built from many different cultures, languages, and stories, and is tied to America’s 250th anniversary. Organizers say to think along themes of belonging, connection, family history, your neighborhood, or even just the feeling of standing in a terminal hearing a dozen languages at once.
Poems should be original, no longer than one page, and can be any form — free verse, rhyme, haiku, whatever works. Writers of all ages are welcome, and anyone under 18 should note their age in their submission. The contest is open to residents of Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties.
Orlando’s Poet Laureate Camara Gaither will select the winners. Winning poems will be announced the week of June 8 and displayed at Orlando International Airport from June 27 through August 31.
