A sprawling low-pressure system currently sweeping across Florida has soaked the state with heavy rain and triggered flash flood warnings. The National Weather Service projects there’s a 40% chance it could evolve into a tropical depression later this week as it enters the northeastern and north-central Gulf of Mexico, where it could become Tropical Storm Dexter. As the system pushes westward toward southeastern Louisiana (along with Alabama and Mississippi) it’s expected to unleash substantial rainfall, regardless of storm classification. New Orleans is bracing for three to five inches of rain between now and Saturday, with some coastal areas potentially seeing up to 10 inches.
If named, Dexter would be the fourth storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, following Andrea, Barry, and Chantal. The season remains on track for above-average activity: NOAA forecasted 13–19 named storms with 6–10 hurricanes, while CSU projected 17 named storms with 9 hurricanes.
