Central Florida composers write a new score for 1922’s “Nosferatu,” performed live at Enzian

Enzian Theater (Website) in Maitland will present the 1922 silent horror film “Nosferatu” with a new original score performed live by the Fernwood String Quartet on Sunday, October 25. “Nosferatu: Shadows and Sound” is part of Enzian’s 13+ Films of Halloween series, and it will be shown at noon and 2:45 p.m. at the theater.

The score was written by 14 members of the Central Florida Composers Forum, known as CF2, and the event is presented in partnership with the group.

F.W. Murnau’s German film, starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok, runs 81 minutes and is an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” The film nearly disappeared after Stoker’s estate sued over copyright.

Composer Erik Branch says the quartet adds color to the black-and-white film, and that because the film has no dialogue, the music does not need to be held back. Jeremy Umlauf says vampires reflect society’s fears, and he sees the greed of the current era as a fitting match for them.

Tickets are listed at $35 for the 2:45 p.m. show, but the noon screening has already sold out. Enzian’s featured cocktail for the series, the Transylvania Twist, is available through the month. For tickets and full details, click HERE.
