A presentation on missing middle housing is set for Thursday, February 19, at UCF Downtown in Orlando’s Parramore neighborhood. The event brings national urban design expert Daniel Parolek (LinkedIn), author of Missing Middle Housing: Thinking Big and Building Small to Respond to Today’s Housing Crisis, to Central Florida to discuss housing trends, design, and policy solutions.
“Missing middle housing” refers to small-scale, multi-unit residential buildings such as duplexes, fourplexes, bungalow courts, and similar types that fit within traditional single-family neighborhoods but provide more housing options. These housing forms are increasingly discussed as a way to address housing affordability, changing household needs, and walkability in urban areas.

The free, in-person session, hosted by CNU Orlando and partners that include University of Central Florida School of Public Administration, AARP Florida, and the American Planning Association Orlando Metro Section, begins with networking at 6 p.m., followed by Parolek’s lecture at 7 p.m. at UCF Downtown. Space is limited, and an RSVP is required.
Parolek is expected to explain why traditional single-family-only zoning no longer meets many communities’ needs, how missing middle housing supports affordability and neighborhood character, and what practical steps cities can take to enable these housing types. The talk will include real-world examples and a question-and-answer segment following the presentation.
