PHOTO VIA HISTORIC DOWNTOWN SANFORD
Stretching nearly five miles along the southern shore of Lake Monroe, the Sanford RiverWalk has become one of Central Florida’s most beloved outdoor destinations. The wide, paved trail invites walkers, cyclists, runners, and families to enjoy sweeping waterfront views while connecting seamlessly with Sanford’s historic downtown. Lined with palms, shaded rest spots, and access points to local parks, the RiverWalk is as much about community gathering as it is recreation.
What makes the RiverWalk stand out is its ability to blend history, culture, and modern design. The path winds past what was once a bustling 19th-century steamboat port, reminding visitors that Sanford played a vital role as a transportation hub along the St. Johns River. Today, those same riverfront views are paired with dining, shopping, and cultural attractions downtown. And you can sometimes spot the St. Johns River Ship (Website) chugging along upriver and imagine what it must have been like back in the day.
The RiverWalk has also gained recognition beyond Sanford, earning the International Making Cities Livable Award in 2009 for its thoughtful urban planning and community-friendly design. As part of the broader Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail network, it connects with the Cross Seminole and Spring-to-Spring Trails, providing outdoor enthusiasts with the opportunity to extend their journey far beyond city limits if they’re feeling brave – and hopefully have a car waiting for them at the end.
Check out our Orlando Shine Street Team member, Alex Copeland, checking it out on his skateboard earlier this month. Alex has been teaching himself to skate in an effort to be more active and get out of the house. Love it.
