A student named Aeva from Riverdale Elementary won Orange County’s “I Voted” sticker contest. Her design will appear on stickers distributed to voters in the upcoming March municipal elections in Eatonville, Apopka, Maitland, and Oakland.
Orange County Supervisor of Elections Karen Castor Dentel announced the winner on February 23 at a reception at her office. Nearly 3,000 students in grades 2-5 from eight Orange County Public elementary schools entered the contest, and the Supervisor of Elections office selected 12 finalists, which you can see at the end of this post.
Aeva’s winning design features an orange representing Orange County, an alligator in water, a palm tree, and a sun. The text “I VOTED” curves along the top of the circular sticker. Well done, Aeva.
Because the winning design and several finalist entries featured alligators, Castor Dentel partnered with Gatorland to surprise the students. During the ceremony, Gatorland staff taught the students about alligators and brought a young gator for them to meet.
“When children learn that their voices matter, they grow into adults who vote, lead, and care for their community,” Castor Dentel said. “That’s how we build lifelong voters.”
The event included certificate presentations for the 12 finalists, light refreshments, and a display of student artwork inside the Supervisor of Elections’ office. Orange County School Board members Angie Gallo, Stephanie Vanos, and Melissa Byrd attended the reception.
Riverdale Elementary is located at 11301 Lokanotosa Trail [GMap] in Orlando and serves pre-K through fifth-grade students.
