THE FORECAST IS CALLING FOR FALLING FROZEN IGUANAS THIS WEEKEND
OUC is in our inbox, trying to get us to spread the word to Central Florida residents about how to prepare for freezing temperatures expected to arrive this weekend. So we thought we’d throw them a bone. The utility said it is prepared to respond to any service impacts while encouraging customers to take steps to stay safe, conserve energy, and protect their homes during the cold weather.
According to OUC, the forecasted freeze comes amid historically low temperatures nationwide, increasing demand on energy systems as y’all turn your thermostats up (sometimes for the first time in a few years). The utility said small adjustments by customers can help keep homes comfortable while reducing strain on the grid. OUC emphasized that conservation efforts are especially important during overnight and early morning hours, when temperatures are expected to be lowest.
OUC is reminding residents to use heating equipment safely. Space heaters and electric blankets should be plugged directly into wall outlets and kept away from furniture, carpets, and walls. The utility cautioned against using stoves, ovens, or outdoor grills to heat homes, citing fire and carbon monoxide risks. Fireplace users are advised to ensure flues are open (duh), use safety screens, and never leave fires unattended. That applies to all of your candles too, Barbara.
To prevent property damage, OUC recommends covering exposed water pipes and outdoor spigots, allowing a slow drip from faucets connected to exterior walls, and keeping pool pumps running to prevent freezing. Homes with solar water heating systems should ensure connected pipes are properly insulated. Because if they freeze, the ice expands and can burst your pipes. Science.
The utility is also encouraging customers to reduce energy use by setting thermostats to 68 degrees or lower, lowering them further overnight or when away from home, and relying on layered clothing instead of increasing heat. Additional steps include closing blinds at night to retain warmth, opening them during the day to capture sunlight, and keeping garage doors closed.
