Opera del Sol (Website), a program of Central Florida Vocal Arts (Website), is bringing “Evil Dead The Musical” to the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater at Dr. Phillips Center October 2 through 4, with a fourth performance just added due to high demand. The production is part of CFVA’s 15th anniversary season, which is themed “Of Dreams and Nightmares.”
Based on the cult horror franchise, the musical follows five college students who unleash an ancient evil at an abandoned cabin in the woods, armed with little more than a chainsaw and a rock score. The show is traditionally known among fans for having a “splash zone,” where audience members can sit close enough to the action to get doused in fake blood. Since a true splash zone isn’t possible in the Pugh Theater’s fancy setting, the production will instead lean on immersive lighting and projection design from award-winning designer Kylee Taylor to pull audiences into the chaos of the cabin.
Central Florida director Michael Knight leads the production, alongside music director John Wilkins, choreographer Amanda Macon and stage manager and costumer Toni Chandler. Armon Flukers, last seen in CFVA’s “Songs for a New World,” stars as Ash, joined by Ethan Garrepy as Moose, Robert Laurita as Knowby, Hannah McGinley Lemasters as Annie, Adam DelMedico as Scott, Kristen Vire as Cheryl, Felicia Thornsbury as Linda, Sarah Joyner as Shelly, Drew Lofredo as Ed, and ensemble members Clementine McCard, Nadia Quiles and Montez Walker.
Performances run Friday, October 2 at 8 p.m., Saturday, October 3 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, October 4 at 3 p.m. The show is recommended for audiences ages 17 and up.
