Orlando police arrested a man Friday afternoon after he allegedly killed a young swan at Lake Eola Park, a bird that had been released just one week prior.
Witnesses at the time reported that the man approached the juvenile mute swan from behind and twisted its neck. He was found carrying the lifeless animal when officers took him into custody around 12:30 p.m.
In an interview with Channel 6, District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan called the incident “heartbreaking,” noting the swans are among the most beloved icons of Lake Eola. She said the suspect’s actions appeared to stem from mental illness and described the act as dangerous and senseless.
The man has been charged with third-degree grand theft and animal cruelty, and his bond has been set at $7,000. His identity has not been released due to him possibly being mentally ill.
