There is trouble in Dance OFF! world. The teens who were set to compete have come down with food poisoning and are incapacitated. Lest you think that means Florida won’t have an entry in the national competition in Pigeon Forge, have no fear because the fathers are going to compete instead. Or as one dad puts it, “The kids are sick, the dads are thick, so we’re stepping in!”
It’s of course, a funny concept – dads squeezing into their daughter’s costumes and trying their best to replicate the choreography they had to watch endlessly in rehearsals – but it’s realized through a clever script peppered with improvisation from a solid cast.
Joel Warren, who audiences will remember from previous Fringe hits 10 Sketches with Rauce & Joel and its aptly named sequel 10 More Sketches, plays a couple of dads on the butch side of the spectrum. We can tell them apart by their hair (one sporting a fluffy mullet large enough to have its own zip code) and their accents, though they both have Warren’s dry humor and, as he notes, the same tattoos. Orlando theatre favorite Robby Pigott plays a flamboyant co-host and a gay dad with performing chops. The latter character gives Pigott the opportunity to flex his dance muscles and gives us a glimpse into his time touring in a certain Lord Lloyd-Weber roller-skating musical.
It’s hard to steal a scene from Warren and Pigott, but the fearless Lisa Glaze does so routinely throughout Dad Bod Dance OFF! as the perpetually horny Candace Caprizi. Caprizi could be the lovechild of Patsy and Edina, whom they drop off on the doorstep of a Florida cracker to be raised. The heir to a dancewear dynasty, she is a former dancing queen herself, the host of the competition…which is sponsored by her family’s company.
