Enzian is hosting John Cameron Mitchell for two special “Hedwig” screenings in June

Enzian Theater (Website) is bringing writer, director, and star John Cameron Mitchell (Instagram) to Maitland for two 25th anniversary screenings of Hedwig and the Angry Inch on June 14 and 15, as the centerpiece of the theater’s 2026 Reel Pride Film Series.

Originally released in 2001, Hedwig follows a fictional East German rock singer navigating identity, love, and thrown tomatoes after a botched gender reassignment surgery leaves her with the “angry inch” of the title, as she sets off on a quest to find her other half (chopped from her primordial self by Thor’s scissors, like how he cut the legs off th whales, and dinosaurs into lizards). The film became a cult touchstone for queer audiences and remains one of the most celebrated independent films of its era. It also features a notable guitar solo by mid-90s MuchMusic alum and Canadian heartthrob Sook-Yin Lee, which must be acknowledged.

Both nights feature a 4K screening of the film, a live mini acoustic performance by Mitchell, and a pre-film costume contest with prizes from The Criterion Collection and The Punk Rock Museum. Sunday, June 14, closes with an extended post-film Q&A with Mitchell moderated by Enzian Programming Manager Tim Anderson, while Monday, June 15, features live audio commentary from Mitchell during the screening itself.

The Enzian events also serve as the kickoff of Hedwig and the Angry Inch: The 25th Anniversary Tour, running through June across the U.S. Tickets are $50 for general admission and $100 for an Event + Meet and Greet package. Both nights begin at 9 p.m. Tickets and more information are available at enzian.org.
